Grayson County native Penny Reece has been named as the next head coach of the Lady Cougar softball team.

Reece returns to Leitchfield after serving stints as the head coach at Greenwood and Meade County for a combined 24 years. In May, she became the winningest coach in KHSAA softball history and will begin the 2022 season with 680 wins.

At Greenwood, she was named state coach of the year six times, won three state titles, 11 regional championships, and 16 district titles.

Reece took three seasons off before returning to coaching at Meade County High School. In four total years in Brandenburg, she won a pair of district championships while amassing a 73-37-2 record.

While a student at GCHS, Reece was a three-sport star in basketball, tennis, and track. She attended Lindsey Wilson College and later Bethel University on basketball scholarships. In 2015, she was inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame.

She will replace Ted Hill who resigned as head coach on June 1 after only one season at the helm of the program.

Last year, the Lady Cougars finished 7-26 with a loss in the 12th District semifinals to Butler County. The team will return over 76% of their total hits from a group that saw many underclassmen in the starting lineup.

Reece and the Lady Cougars will open the 2022 regular season in March.
