Beginning Monday, the Leitchfield Police Department’s headquarters has been relocated to 515 South Main Street at the intersection of the William Thomason Byway.
The move is two years in the making, and greatly expands several areas crucial to police department operations, including a must needed and legally required expansion of evidence storage space. One of the impetuses behind LPD moving to a new, larger location was then-Leitchfield Police Chief Bryan Langdon saying the department was beginning to use officers’ office space for evidence storage.
Additionally, with between 20 and 25 officers at any given time on staff, the smallish former police department headquarters could best be described as cramped.
The newly renovated 14,500 square feet facility – formerly known as the old Rite Aid building — will be shared with Leitchfield City Hall, and includes a dedicated police department entry. Roughly 9,000 square feet of space is being used for LPD headquarters with approximately 5,500 square feet designated for City Hall.
LPD’s office hours remains 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
City officials hope to have a firm move date for City Hall later this week.
