The Leitchfield City Council has likely held its final city council meeting at City Hall on West White Oak Street.

Two years after the council officially voted to make the move, employees at Leitchfield City Hall have commenced the arduous task of moving to the new city hall at the corner of South Main Street and William Thomason Byway.

On Monday, the Leitchfield Police Department began moving to the new, 14,500 square foot facility. That move is expected to take up to two weeks.

Mayor Rick Embry said at Monday night’s city council meeting that it was probably the last meeting to be held at what is now the old city hall. Embry is hosting a walk-through of the new facility for city agencies on Tuesday morning.

It was on March 4, 2019, that the council unanimously approved making the move after the city purchased, under former Mayor William Thomason (who Embry recently took on a tour of the facility), the old Rite Aid building for $2.85 million. Embry, both as a councilman and newly elected mayor, opposed the move, as he sought to advertise the building for sale. But early in his term, and after it became clear the council was strongly in favor of the upgrade, he decided it was time to “move on,” giving his tacit approval.
