A Clarkson city employee has been arrested on DUI and drug charges following a traffic stop in Leitchfield.
Leitchfield Police Officer DJ Newton executed a traffic stop just after 11:00 on Friday, May 22, on a 2002 Toyota Tacoma, being driven by 49-year-old Leslie “Neil” Harrison, of Clarkson. Harrison, who was driving his personal vehicle at the time, is the supervisor of the Clarkson Sewer Department.
According to the arrest citation, Newton conducted the stop on Harrison as he drove south on the William Thomason Byway, near the intersection of Elizabethtown Road. Newton executed the stop after Harrison, “… made a lane change into the median that separates the intersection of Shaw Station Road turning lane and the intersection of Elizabethtown Road turning lane,” the citation says.
Additionally, the vehicle’s rear license plate was not illuminated, and the Toyota had a broken passenger side taillight.
Upon making contact with Harrison, Newton “… observed glassy eyes, slightly bloodshot, (and) flushed red face and pupils slowly reactive” to light, according the citation.
When Newton asked Harrison for his insurance card the citations states that Harrison responded, “I’m Neil Harrison, who are you? You must be new.”
Newton then had the suspect exit the truck where he performed a field sobriety test and arrested Harrison.
During a search of the truck, Newton located two loose pills, identified as oxycodone, the citation says.
Harrison was charged with DUI, possession of a controlled substance (drug unspecified), having a prescription controlled substance not in its proper container, rear license plate not illuminated, and no tail lamps.
He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center but is not longer listed as an inmate.
When reached for comment, Clarkson Mayor Bonnie Henderson said, “I am aware of Neil Harrison’s arrest and am awaiting adjudication of his case before making any determinations.”
