As previously reported by K105.com and many other news outlets, nursing homes have become a coronavirus (COVID-19) battlefield, as the disease continues to kill elderly Kentuckians at an alarming rate. Embodying that battle is a nearby nursing home that was hit particularly hard by the highly contagious virus on Thursday, as five new deaths were reported at the facility.
Genesis Health (aka Edmonson Center), a nursing home in Brownsville, reported five new COVID-19-related deaths on Thursday, according to the Kentucky Department for Public Health. The long-term care facility’s initial coronavirus death was announced on May 1.
The newly reported deaths were victims between the ages of 80 and 97.
The 86-bed facility has had at least 30 residents test positive for the virus over the last seven days, as well as one staff member.
Edmonson County now has 42 confirmed COVID-19 cases and six deaths, with 73.8 percent of the positive cases arising from Genesis Health, and 100 percent of the county’s six fatalities.
