A Morgantown man has been arrested on drug charges after fleeing police.

On Monday night at approximately 11:20, the Morgantown Police Department observed a silver Dodge Ram 1500 driving recklessly and attempted to execute a traffic stop near Aberdeen Grocery, at the intersection of Caneyville Road (Hwy 79) and Beaver Dam Road (Hwy 231).

The driver of the truck, 34-year-old Phillip R. Thomason, of Morgantown, failed to yield to police and a brief pursuit ensued, according to Morgantown Police Chief Giles Taylor. Soon after the pursuit began, Thomason lost control of the Dodge after turning onto Brownsville Road (Hwy 70) from Caneyville Road.

Phillips then attempted to continue fleeing through a field, where police terminated the pursuit and observed Phillips from the roadway as the Dodge became stuck in the mud about 100 yards from the road, Taylor said. The suspect then fled the area on foot.

Taylor noted that police located methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia on the ground near Phillips’ vehicle as well as inside the truck.

Further investigation led to Phillips being located and arrested at 765 Brownsville Road.

He was charged with possession of controlled substance (methamphetamine), two counts of fleeing or evading police (in a motor vehicle, on foot), reckless driving, driving on a DUI suspended license, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Thomason was lodged in the Butler County Detention Center but is no longer listed as an inmate.
