On Thursday, the Morgantown Police Department received a report of drug activity involving two suspects.

Morgantown Police Chief Giles Taylor said through a joint investigation with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle containing the two suspects after it ran a stop sign.

The officer initially lost sight of the vehicle, Taylor said, but deputies soon observed the car and attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled police, spurring a high-speed pursuit.

Taylor said the pursuit ended near the 1700 block of Russellville Road when the vehicle came to a stop.

The vehicle’s driver, 38-year-old Matthew Martin, of Butler County, was arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, fleeing or evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police office, first-degree wanton endangerment, reckless driving, speeding 26 mph over the limit, and failure to maintain insurance.

Martin’s passenger, 35-year-old Amanda Thomasson, of Butler County, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, trafficking in a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both suspects were lodged in the Butler County Jail.
