The Caneyville man shot in late November as he chased burglars off his property has been killed in a shooting in Rosine.
Johnnie Hayes, 59, was shot and killed Wednesday night in the small Ohio County community, about 28 miles west of Leitchfield.
Police questioned a male suspect, but it’s unclear if an arrest has been made. The suspect is also from Grayson County, according to an unconfirmed report.
Hayes and 39-year-old Wanda Ferguson, who lived with Hayes on his property in the 2500 block of Richland Road, were shot multiple times on the morning of November 21 as the couple followed two burglars off Hayes’ property in a vehicle. Hayes and Ferguson followed the two men, who were traveling in separate vehicles, on Richland Road until at least one of the burglars opened fired, striking Hayes and Ferguson and causing their vehicle to leave the road.
The two suspects have yet to be arrested.
Then, on December 2, Hayes found an explosive device in a barn on his property. The Kentucky State Police Bomb Squad dispatched to the scene where authorities discovered the device was a large bucket with gun powder and other objects inside. KSP detonated the device. No arrests have been made related to the incident.
