The Leitchfield man charged with assault after severely injuring a one-year-old baby has now been charged with murder after the child passed away.

Friday morning at approximately 2:50, Kentucky State Police arrested 25-year-old James Garrigus after he took his girlfriend’s one-year-old baby from a residence on Clark School Road in Clarkson to Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center. An investigation by Kentucky State Police detectives found that Garrigus assaulted the baby, who suffered from “severe head trauma,” according to Kentucky State Police spokesman Scotty Sharp.

The baby was transported to Norton Children’s Hospital where he later died.

Sharp said that Sunday afternoon, detectives charged Garrigus, who is already lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center, with the child’s murder.

Garrigus was previously arrested in Grayson County on March 9, 2016 on a total of 10 charges, including terroristic threatening, menacing, harassment, criminal trespass, and violating an EPO/DVO.
