A former Boyd County High School teacher and coach who had a sexual relationship with a student has accepted a plea deal.

Michael Sammons, 53, of South Shore, accepted an offer from prosecutors and pled guilty to prohibited use of an electronic communications systems to procure a minor for a sex offense, a felony. Sammons was originally charged in May 2017 with third-degree rape, but that charge was dismissed with prejudice at the request of the victim.

Prosecutors are recommending a two-year prison sentence. Formal sentencing is slated for early October.

The Ashland Daily Independent previously reported that Sammons was in his first year as a math teacher and coach at Boyd County High School when the incident occurred. He had been a teacher and coach for over 20 years, having previously worked in Greenup County and Portsmouth, Ohio.
