An elderly Grayson County man suffered an apparent medical emergency and was gravely injured after leaving a roadway and traveling deep into a densely wooded area.

Grayson County Chief Deputy Sonny Poteet, the Falls of Rough Fire Department and EMS responded to the crash in the 1000 block of Cave Creek Road Monday afternoon at approximately 4:45.

Upon arriving at the scene, first responders found that a Honda passenger car, while traveling in a sharp, downhill curve, drove straight and into a campground.

The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed (100 miles per hour, according to one witness) as it missed hitting multiple buildings, campers and trees before driving between two structures where the vehicle entered a heavily wooded area.

The car traveled between 80 and 100 yards into the woods.

The male driver, of Falls of Rough, was extricated from the vehicle by Falls of Rough firefighters before being transported by EMS to the Rough River State Park Airport where the victim was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.

The driver’s passenger (and wife) was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
