The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office “Behind the Badge” fundraising arm is currently collecting donations for a sick 10-year-old boy and his parents.

“This Grayson County family has many challenging days ahead of them,” Grayson Co. Sheriff Norman Chaffins said in a social media post.

Chaffins stated that a few months ago doctors discovered the boy had a brain lesion, which appears to cause the child to have multiple seizures a day.

“Unfortunately, he is not responding well to medicine to control them. In the past two years he has only had 24 days where he did not have a seizure,” Chaffins said. “Now, this young man is being asked to go through a pre-op surgical procedure to determine if he would be a candidate for additional treatments (medical implant devices and/or neurosurgery) to possibly help control his seizures since they are not responding to medication.”

This pre-op process is done in phases, the sheriff noted, (and) could take a year or more to determine if the boy is a candidate for alternate treatments.

“During this time, the brain lesion will be monitored for growth or change.” Chaffins noted. “However, the seizures are the immediate issue that need to be addressed.”

Chaffins said the goal is to collect $12,000 in donations, which will be used to “cover the family’s maximum out-of-pocket expenses with their insurance for the year.”

Currently, both parents are working, and the child’s father is working overtime to help make ends meet. Every penny collected will go directly to the family, Chaffins said.
