A wrong-way driver has died after hitting a woman raking leaves and, while fleeing the scene, hitting a semi-truck head-on.

Kentucky State Police said the crash occurred Saturday afternoon at approximately 12:40 at the 128-mile marker of I-69 in Webster County.

The state police investigation showed that 61-year-old William J. Holmes, of Madisonville, was driving a 2020 Ford Ranger north in the southbound lanes of the interstate when he struck a southbound Freightliner head-on.

The Ford then hit a Nissan Rogue, being driven by Robyn Crain, of Dover, Tennessee.

Holmes was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Webster Co. Sheriff’s Office.

The truck driver, Elizabeth Duporte-Hobson, of Palm Coast, Florida, was transported to a hospital with minor injuries. Crain was uninjured.

Prior to Holmes crashing into the semi, he had left his home on West Lake Loop in Hopkins County driving at a high rate of speed when he struck his neighbor, Shannon King, while she was raking leaves in her yard, the Hopkins Co. Sheriff’s Office told WFIE.com.

Holmes, while driving through another yard, nearly struck another one of his neighbors, Russell Brother, and his juvenile child.

King was airlifted to an unknown hospital.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police investigations are ongoing.
