Amidst the destruction caused by a devastating fire at an Irvington apartment complex, a cat emerged from the flames scathed but alive.

The late afternoon fire on Wednesday heavily damaged Park Place apartments on Landon Lane, off Hwy 60 in southwest Irvington. The 24-unit complex is comprised of two buildings; one of the structures suffered no damage. Several residents were displaced and were provided housing in Brandenburg.

Authorities at the scene located a male cat, named Meatball, that was suffering from “serious burns,” according to the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office. Animal control was dispatched to the fire scene.

Meatball, in addition to “serious burns,” was covered with seared fur (see photo below) and received veterinary care.

The sheriff’s office, looking for Meatball’s owner, noted in a social media post that the cat was neutered and had a microchip but the phone number connected to the chip was no longer in service.

“Let’s rally together to help us locate his owners,” the sheriff’s office implored.

Shortly after authorities publicized Meatball’s plight, the owners were found. It’s not clear if Meatball’s owners lived at the complex, or if Meatball was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Regardless, that’s one tough kitty.
