Historic flooding in Kentucky has not only disrupted travel, caused damage to homes, vehicles and businesses, it also resulted in inmates being moved out of the Bullitt County Detention Center (BCDC) due to floodwaters.

“Due to the risk of emergency vehicles being unable to access the Bullitt County Detention Center because of rising floodwaters,” Bullitt Co. Jailer Bryan Whitaker said, “I decided to evacuate all Bullitt County inmates and send them to other secure facilities. No life is worth losing.”

Grayson County Jailer Jason Woosley told K105 that 123 Bullitt Co. inmates were lodged in the Grayson Co. Detention Center (GCDC) on Sunday.

Of course, the GCDC houses state and federal inmates, and held inmates from a far western Kentucky jail following the December 2021 tornadoes that leveled the Graves County Detention Center.

The GCDC, since an expansion was completed in March 2021, boasts over 750 inmate beds.

The Bullitt County inmates were returned to the BCDC on Tuesday.
