The Leitchfield Fire Department and multiple other first responders were dispatched to Peter Cave Boat Ramp after an overwhelming odor of gasoline was detected in the area.

Upon arriving at the scene at approximately 7:40 Sunday night, first responders found that two large gasoline tanks used to refuel boats had become unattached and flipped over in floodwaters, spilling fuel into the water.

Leitchfield fire personnel were prepared to place a boom around the tanks to soak up the gasoline, and also attempt to turn the leaking tanks upright. The Environmental Protections Agency (EPA), though, told Grayson Co. Emergency Management that it wasn’t worth the risk to firefighters, considering the widespread depth of the floodwaters rendered the leakage innocuous.

The Grayson Co. Water District further told Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall that in no way would the spilled gasoline make it into the water supply.

The EPA is expected to arrive on Monday to further assess the leakage.

In addition to LFD, Grayson Co. Emergency Management and the Grayson Co. Water District, personnel from Leitchfield Utilities and Kentucky Fish & Wildlife responded to the boat ramp.

The Falls of Rough Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene but they were cancelled prior to their arrival.

K105 will have updates, if any, on this situation.
