9-year-old boy walking to bus stop, 74-year-old man trapped in vehicle die in floodwaters

A nine-year-old boy and 74-year-old man have died in floodwaters.

The nine-year-old victim, Gabriel Andrews, of Frankfort, died on Friday after being swept away by floodwaters as he walked to his school bus stop, according to a statement by Gov. Andy Beshear.

The incident happened in the Hickory Hill area of Frankfort on Friday morning at approximately 6:35. He was found deceased at about 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Franklin County Schools issued the following statement on the child’s death:

We are deeply saddened at this horrific tragedy that claimed the life of one of our students. The entire Franklin County School System is praying for the family and friends of those directly affected by the events this morning. We are more than a school system, we are a family at Franklin County Schools, and we share this loss together. At this time, we are working with support staff at our schools and offering services to our students, faculty, and staff who need assistance during this time. We are eternally grateful for our community first responders from both city and county agencies who selflessly responded to assist in this situation.

In Nelson County, a 74-year-old man died Saturday morning after being trapped in his car in floodwaters, according to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office.

The man was found by first responders in the 2800 block of Nelsonville Road, about eight miles southwest of Bardstown, Saturday morning at 3:30 after being dispatched to a water rescue, according to the sheriff’s office.

When rescuers arrived on the scene, they found the man deceased inside his completely submerged vehicle.

The identity of the victim has not been released.
