The Grayson County High School Football Alumni Association (GCHSFAA) has named Greyson Chaffins as the winner of the sixth annual Doug Thompson Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is given by the GCHSFAA and is worth $500. The qualifications can go to any member of the team who plans to continue their education through an undergraduate degree program or certification from a college, university, or technical school. They also require the individual to go “above and beyond in representing the program and community.”

Chaffins joined the football team before his freshman season despite never playing the sport before. His unwavering work ethic allowed him to finish his career with numerous awards including: outstanding freshman/sophomore, outstanding teammate award, and first-team all-district by the Greater Louisville Football Coaches Association this past season.

Off the field, he carries over a 4.0 GPA, is an active community volunteer, and is even a KHSAA junior umpire.

“Greyson is one of the most deserving recipients of this scholarship,” head coach Bryan Jones said. “Greyson has been the face of Cougar Football and what we are about for the last couple of years. He is high achieving academically, he’s never made a B, as well as athletically being an integral part of our back-to-back District 4 Championships. As a Coach I can not say enough about Greyson Chaffins and what he has not only meant to the program but also the school and me personally! Love him like he’s my own!”

Chaffins joins Sawyer Drake, Kole Snyder, Hunter Tomes, Cooper Terry, and Zack Bratcher as recipients.

The scholarship is typically officially awarded at the senior awards ceremony in May.

Every year, funds are received through private donations and other fundraising efforts, including this year’s Mark Pope signed basketball raffle.

Greyson is the son of Lauren and Norman Chaffins. Next year, he will attend Kentucky Wesleyan College on a football scholarship.
