A driver was airlifted after a flipping truck was struck by a minivan on the Western Kentucky Parkway between Leitchfield and Caneyville.
Grayson Co. Deputy Andy Cast, Leitchfield Police Officer Jeff Jackson, the Caneyville and Leitchfield Fire Departments, EMS, and Grayson Co. Emergency Management responded to the crash Friday night at approximately 8:30 near the 97-mile marker of the westbound parkway.
Based on marks at the scene and police statements, the accident occurred when a westbound GMC Sierra struck the end of a guardrail head-on (see below: one of the truck’s tires entangled in the guardrail). The truck then began to flip multiple times, as it reentered the westbound lanes.
Despite a Grayson Co. woman, driving a westbound Chrysler Pacifica, attempting to avoid the truck, the minivan struck the GMC.
The truck came to rest in a westbound lane, as it traveled more than 100 yards after the vehicle struck the guardrail.
The driver of the Sierra, 50-year-old Joshua Shafer, of Indiana, was transported by EMS to Caneyville Elementary School where he was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital.
A Grayson Co. woman in the Chrysler was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The parkway was shut down in both directions for approximately 40 minutes as first responders worked the scene.
