Kentucky State Police is investigating a fatal Kentucky State Police shooting.

The KSP Critical Incident Response Team responded to a deadly trooper-involved shooting in Gallatin County Thursday morning at approximately 4:45.

State police said its preliminary investigation indicates troopers were requested to assist the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office at a mobile home park where an armed man was outside his residence firing shots into the air.

The individual, 54-year-old James E. Walter, of Warsaw, “continued to fire his weapon inside his residence and verbally threatened to shoot law enforcement,” state police said.

Troopers, KSP said, attempted to de-escalate the situation by “utilizing negotiation techniques.”

Soon, the KSP Special Response Team (SRT) arrived as negotiations continued.

Then, at approximately 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Walter “opened the door to his residence and presented his firearm,” state police said, as “members of the KSP SRT engaged Mr. Walter … he received fatal injuries.”

The investigation continues.
