The Leitchfield daycare center where a worker pulled a one-year-old child’s hair out has been shut down.

The Play Zone, on Marion Street, was shut down on Friday by a state agency, according to the Leitchfield Police Department. It’s unclear which state agency closed the facility, but the Cabinet for Health and Family Services Division of Regulated Child Care is responsible for investigating complaints against childcare providers.

It’s unclear if the business has been permanently closed or if it’s a temporary closure.

The closure, though, comes after a The Play Zone employee, 24-year-old Keshia S. Cochran, of Leitchfield, pulled a baby’s hair, ripping out approximately two inches of scalp and tossing it in a garbage can.

The incident occurred earlier this month.

“On the surveillance video, the child begins screaming uncontrollably and the worker appears to throw something in the trash can which officers believed to be a handful of hair,” Leitchfield police said at the time of Cochran’s arrest.

The child, according to police, had a “complete bald spot over 6 centimeters of its scalp.”

Under questioning by police, Cochran admitted to “pulling the child’s hair and removing a substantial amount of hair from the child’s head.”

Cochran was charged with first-degree criminal abuse.
