A Leitchfield man has pled guilty to killing an Illinois woman in Breckinridge County.

Gregory S. McCrary, 43, pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter on Tuesday just prior to the start of his murder trial in Breckinridge County, according to WXBC.com. McCrary killed 42-year-old Dwan Atwell in May 2021.

First-degree manslaughter is a class B felony, punishable by no less than 10 years in prison and no more than 20 years.

As K105 previously reported, Kentucky State Police and the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office opened a death investigation on Thursday, May 27, 2021, after deputies located a deceased female at 7863 South Highway 259, just north of McDaniels.

The deceased was later identified as Atwell.

The Bloomington (ILL) Police Department said Atwell was reported missing “out of Kentucky” by her family on March 11, 2021, and that she could “possibly (be) in the Bloomington/Normal area.”

The Bloomington PD on March 29 said that Atwell had “not spoke to family” since December 2020. The police department further stated, “She is missing under unknown/suspicious circumstances.”

McCrary was indicted by a Breckinridge County Grand Jury on murder and persistent felony offender charges.

Final sentencing is scheduled for May 7.
