A 91-year-old Grayson County man survived after a train struck his truck in Leitchfield.
The accident happened Monday afternoon at approximately 4:15 at the railroad crossing at the intersection of Beaver Dam Road (Hwy 62) and Quarry Road.
Leitchfield Police Department Sgt. Chuck Hoover and Officer Erik Franklin, the Leitchfield Fire Department, Grayson Co. Emergency Management, and EMS responded to the incident.
Leitchfield police said the investigation showed that a Dodge Ram truck was turning onto Quarry Road from Beaver Dam Road. As the truck was crossing the tracks, an eastbound train struck the rear of the truck and flipped it off the tracks.
The truck came to rest on the driver’s side next to Quarry Road, taking out a Grayson Co. Extension Office sign.
Firefighters assisted the male out of the truck.
The man, who appeared to suffer no injuries, initially refused treatment but a relative insisted he go to the hospital. He was transported by EMS to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center.
The railroad crossing, while having flashing lights, has no security arms (aka barrier gates) to keep traffic from crossing when a train is approaching.
