An elderly intoxicated driver has killed a man riding on a moped.

Kentucky State Police said troopers responded to the crash Sunday afternoon at approximately 4:15 at the intersection of Meader Street and Handley Avenue in Campbellsville.

State police said the investigation showed that 78-year-old Howard E. Poling, of Campbellsville, was traveling east on Handley Avenue in a 2003 Ford Expedition when he attempted to cross Meader Street.

Poling, though, failed to see a moped, being driven by 55-year-old Johnny Dickens, of Campbellsville, traveling north on Meader Street, resulting in Poling’s SUV striking the moped.

Dickens was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Taylor County Coroner’s Office.

Poling was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, DUI (aggravating circumstances), possession of an open alcohol beverage container in a motor vehicle, and failure to produce an insurance card.

He was lodged in the Taylor County Detention Center.
