15-year-old student/athlete dies after collapsing during track practice

A high school freshman has died after collapsing during track practice.

James Wesson “Wes” Phillippe, 15, of Somerset, died Tuesday morning after collapsing Monday during track practice at Meece Middle School in Somerset, the Fayette Co. Coroner’s Office told media outlets.

Phillippe, a Somerset High School student, was initially transported to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital before being transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he died.

Somerset Independent Schools Superintendent Kyle Lively released the following statement following Phillippe’s death:

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of one of our own. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends during this difficult time. As a school community, we stand together to support each other and honor the memory of a student who will always be a part of the Somerset family. In addition to track and field, Phillippe was a high school wrestler, according to his obituary.

His cause of death is pending autopsy results.
