Police: Man fatally struck by train, alcohol likely a factor

A man struck by a train late Wednesday night has died.

K105 reported Thursday morning that 48-year-old Joseph Chastain, of Franklin, was struck by a train as he walked on the tracks at South Railroad Street and Breckenridge Street in the heart of Franklin.

The accident occurred at 11:44 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Franklin Police Department.

The CSX train operator told police that a horn was sounded but Chastain continued to walk on the tracks.

Chastain was transported to The Medical Center at Franklin before being airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries early Thursday morning.

Police said alcohol was likely a factor in the incident, as Chastain had a strong odor of alcohol.
