A woman gave birth in the back of an ambulance in Ohio County during the middle of a thunderstorm.
The incident began Sunday after midnight when Hancock County EMS, with assistance from the Fordsville Fire Department, made a run to pick up a woman in labor and take her to a hospital.
“We loaded her up in the ambulance. They started heading toward the hospital. We went back to the fire department,” Fordsville Fire Department Lt. Michelle Cooper told WEHT.com.
In the pouring rain – parts of Ohio Co. received six inches of rain over the weekend – and as the soon-to-be mother was on her way to the hospital, along with the child’s father, the baby apparently became tired of waiting.
At the intersection of Hwy 54 and Easton Road in Fordsville, the ambulance pulled to the side of the road as EMS personnel delivered a healthy baby girl.
“I just want to make sure that we give a huge thanks to Hancock County EMS because they were the true rock stars in this,” Cooper WEHT.com.
After the baby arrived, it took the ambulance much longer than normal to get to the hospital due to flooded roadways, as Cooper said from the time the ambulance picked up the mother and father until they arrived at the hospital was two hours.
