Following fresh snow falling in Grayson County overnight, coupled with sub-teen temperatures, the roadways in the county are slick and dangerous for Thursday morning.
The region received slightly more snow that anticipated – up to an inch predicted versus the approximately two inches Leitchfield received — on top of the four to five inches of snow already on the ground (minus the Wednesday melt-off).
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office told K105 at around 3:30 a.m. Thursday that roads in the county are extremely slick. With incredibly frigid temperatures tormenting the county during the morning hours Thursday (the 10-to-13-degree range), motorists should give themselves extra time to reach their destinations.
Additionally, road treatments intended to melt snow and ice are rendered ineffective when the temperature falls to such extreme lows.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 4 spokesman Chris Jessie noted that plow crews worked until early Wednesday evening “but with the temperatures dropping below treatment effectiveness thresh holds, trucks will not be out overnight.”
Jessie said, though, that plow crews would be activated before the “Thursday morning commute.”
Snowplow crews will also be deployed by the city of Leitchfield and Grayson County government. Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson noted that snow plows will be deployed, but “it’s going to become very difficult to have them (roads) cleared due to the temperature forecast this evening (Wednesday) and throughout the week.”
The Western Kentucky Parkway appears to be in good shape, although black ice could be a real issue for motorists, particularly during the morning hours.
A measure of relief could arrive Thursday afternoon as the temperature is forecast to reach into the low 20s, with the possibility of sunshine Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
