Elizabethtown man perishes in floodwaters

An Elizabethtown man has died after driving into floodwaters and exiting his vehicle.

Thomas Oakes, 63, perished when he “ran his vehicle off the road into high water,” according to The News-Enterprise. Oakes then left his vehicle and drowned.

His body was found a short distance from his vehicle.

The incident happened on Gilead Church Road in Glendale at approximately 8:00 Saturday evening.

The Elizabethtown, Sonora and Glendale Fire Departments, Hardin Co. EMS and Hardin Co. Emergency Management responded to the accident.

Gov. Andy Beshear on Tuesday said 14 people have died due to recent flooding, as two more flood-related deaths have been reported in Jefferson County.

Beshear added that 191 Kentucky residents are living in shelters at state parks:

One-hundred twelve adults and 31 children are being housed at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Prestonsburg; two adults are at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in Pineville; 16 adults and two children are sheltered at Natural Bridge State Resort Park in Powell Co.; and 13 adults and eight children are at Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park in Perry Co.
