State Sen. Steve Meredith has been appointed to a committee that works with other states’ leadership to improve public safety as well as social and human services.

Meredith, a Republican from Leitchfield, was appointed by Senate Pres. Robert Stivers, R-Manchester, to serve on the Human Services and Public Safety Committee of The Council of State Governments Southern Office (CSG South).

“As a committee member, Meredith will collaborate with policymakers across the 15-member southern states to advance legislative initiatives focused on public safety, human services, and social policy,” according to Morgan P’Pool, Communications Manager for the Kentucky Senate Majority.

This appointment grants Meredith access to research, legislative briefings and expert resources provided by CSG South with support from Committee Chair, Rep. Mandi Ballinger, of Georgia.

“I am honored to be appointed to this committee and look forward to working with fellow legislators to advance policies that strengthen public safety and improve social services,” Meredith said. “As a former hospital CEO and longtime advocate for rural healthcare, I understand the critical need for innovative solutions that support families and ensure access to essential services. I appreciate CSG South’s commitment to fostering collaboration and developing strategies that benefit communities across our region.”

Founded in 1947, CSG South is the largest of four regional offices under the Council of State Governments, dedicated to fostering intergovernmental cooperation among southern states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

“The organization’s annual Southern Legislative Conference (SLC) is a premier regional event where policymakers convene to discuss legislative initiatives and explore emerging government solutions,” P’Pool said.

As a committee member, Meredith’s responsibilities will include:

  • Representing Kentucky and engaging with fellow legislators to enhance regional public safety and human services policies
  • Participating in committee sessions and business meetings at the Southern Legislative Conference
  • Contributing to legislative round tables and policy discussions
  • Voting on key policy positions and committee leadership roles
  • Engaging in CSG South’s legislative briefings, webinars, and leadership development programs.

Meredith will serve a two-year term ending December 31, 2026.

The 2025 Southern Legislative Conference will be held in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 19 – 23, to provide policymakers with an opportunity to discuss state budgeting strategies, fiscal responsibility, and government efficiency for the Southern region.
