The Leitchfield Police Department is alerting residents of a “discouraging” phone scam circulating in Grayson County.
“As an attempt to alert the public, we have worked with Leitchfield Internal Medicine and Big Clifty Primary Care and Neurology to inform the public of the nuances of these incidents,” Leitchfield PD said.
Patients of these healthcare facilities, police said, have reported to both providers that they are receiving phone calls from the office numbers, with the caller claiming to be an employee or provider.
“The caller continues to ask for personal information under the ruse of needing this information for the pharmacist or to discuss medical test results,” LPD said.
After speaking with staff members about this issue, Leitchfield PD is offering the following tips on how to respond to the scam calls:
- Even though the number is correct, it does not mean that the caller is associated with the medical provider.
- Please ask who it is that you are speaking to and who they are calling on behalf of. If the names do not match your provider’s information, hang up.
- If you receive a call that you are uncertain about, hang up and call the office directly and ask to speak to a specific employee that you know.
- The caller should not be asking for personal information over the phone such as height and weight because it would be irrelevant for the pharmacy or lab to need this information in most cases.
- As always, never share specific identifying information over the phone such as, driver’s license numbers, social security numbers, banking or credit card information, etc.
