A man accused of going on an arson binge and fleeing police has been arrested after being found unconscious in his getaway vehicle.

According to Kentucky State Police, the incident began at approximately 3:00 a.m. Sunday when the Sunshine Fire Department reported to state police that firefighters had responded to three structure fires over a short period of time in the Cranks community in Harlan County.

During the investigation, a suspect, 24-year-old Gordon Fultz, of Cawood, was developed, as police also learned he was driving a Ford F-150.

During the investigation, Trooper Benjamin Meadows received information that Fultz was on Garrett Hollow Road, about 15 miles southeast of Harlan, trying to set a mobile home on fire. Meadows arrived in the area and located the suspect’s vehicle before observing Fultz inside an abandoned mobile home “trying to start a fire,” KSP said.

Fultz was able to flee in his truck “before troopers could confront him,” state police said.

Later, Trooper Cameron Cornett located Fultz’s vehicle parked on Hwy 3001, “with Fultz unconscious in the driver’s seat.”

Fultz was arrested and became violent, according to state police, as he is accused of “kicking the windows and (using) the rear radar antenna to shatter the rear window” of a cruiser.

He was charged with third-degree arson, third-degree assault of a police officer, fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), resisting arrest, reckless driving, first-degree criminal mischief, driving on a DUI suspended license, and failure to produce an insurance card.

Fultz was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
