The Leitchfield Police Department is alerting residents to a rise in car break-ins despite the dangerously cold temperatures.
“Over the last 48 hours it seems that some person or persons have braved this extremely cold weather to enter into vehicles across the majority of the city limits,” LPD said in a social media post on Monday, before adding that the bulk of the break-ins occurred on the “north side of town.”
LDP is also asking that residents with video surveillance share footage of unknown people on their property.
“If any residents have video of persons on your property over the last couple of nights please have an officer come view or bring the video to LPD for officers to view to help develop a suspect,” the department said.
The suspect[s], police said, have stolen “small personal items, hunting equipment, jewelry, a wallet, and even a bible from victims (sic) cars.”
Officials recommend locking vehicles and outbuildings and to report any suspicious activity.
Contact the Leitchfield Police Department by calling 270-259-3850, or call the Central Dispatch non-emergency number at 270-259-0303.
The 2022 break-ins did not occur in any specific area of the city, but rather all around Leitchfield.
The LPD alert regarding vehicle break-ins follows Officer Jeff Jackson locating a stolen vehicle in a field off Salt River Road on Sunday afternoon. The Ford F-150 had been taken from a Leitchfield business parking lot.
