A police officer in Hopkinsville suffered severe hand injuries while being attacked by a dog.
The Hopkinsville Police Department officer on Saturday afternoon was taking two dogs, which had been running loose on West 2nd Street, back home when one of the animals attacked the officer, according to a report by WKDZ.com. The officer responded by firing multiple shots, killing the dog.
The officer was transported to Jennie Stuart Health hospital for treatment of what WKDZ.com said were “severe hand injuries.”
The dog’s owner, Shirley Shelton, was charged with dogs running at large, harboring a vicious animal and dogs to be vaccinated against rabies, according to WHOP.com.
WSMV.com reports that police said the dog “appeared to be a pit bull mix.”
The name of the officer has not been released.
