Six firefighters were injured after a roof collapsed at a former distillery in Nelson County.

The Northeast Nelson Fire Department (NNFD) responded at approximately 1:00 Thursday afternoon to the blaze in the 300 block of East Main Street in Fairfield, approximately 12 miles northeast of Bardstown, at the former Henry McKenna Distillery.

The fire department said that upon arriving, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from an apartment. The fire was spreading from the first floor to the second floor of the structure, and to an adjacent warehouse.

As firefighters from multiple departments were battling the blaze, three Northeast Nelson firefighters and two Nelson County firefighters became trapped “by a complete roof collapse,” according to the NNFD.

A sixth firefighter suffered injuries while helping rescue the five trapped firefighters.

All six firefighters were transported to Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown where they were treated and released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Red Cross responded to the scene to assist displaced families.

The Taylorsville – Spencer County Fire Department also battled the blaze.
