Multiple students were injured after a school bus driver suffered a medical emergency.
The incident occurred Wednesday morning at approximately 6:30 in Burlington, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the accident at the intersection of Collier Lane and Hanover Boulevard where the school bus ran a stop sign and “continued across Hanover Boulevard and crashed into several trees in the backyard of a residence on Sherwood Court.”
When deputies made contact with the driver “he was in full cardia arrest,” the sheriff’s office said.
“They removed him from the driver’s seat and immediately began administering CPR,” according to the sheriff’s office. “Burlington Fire/EMS arrived on the scene within minutes of the deputies and assumed care of the driver. Deputies and additional EMS personnel then began accessing the students for injuries.”
WXIX.com reports that four students were injured and transported to a local hospital. Three of the four students were treated and released while one student remains in the hospital for observation.
The injured students attend Cooper High School.
The driver is in critical condition in the ICU at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Florence, the sheriff’s office said.
