A Leitchfield man has been arrested after fleeing police at speeds reaching over 100 miles per hour before crashing on Grayson Springs Road.
Thursday night at approximately 10:25, Leitchfield Police Officer Chuck Hoover was stationary near the intersection of the William Thomason Byway and Wallace Avenue when a northbound GMC Sierra Crew Cab blew by Hoover on the byway at what he estimated to be 90 miles per hour (in a 45 mph zone), according to the arrest citation.
Hoover attempted to catch up to the truck, as the officer at one point reached 125 miles per hour. The fleeing vehicle was traveling at what Hoover estimated to be 110 to 120 mph, the citation states.
As Hoover approached the intersection with Grayson Springs Road, he observed the GMC turn right onto Grayson Springs, and again accelerate. Hoover continued pursuing the truck “over the hill on Grayson Springs Road and observed several tree limbs and smoke from the right side of the roadway,” the citation states.
Hoover then noticed the GMC “standing up in the trees about 40 feet off the roadway” in the 1300 block of Grayson Springs Road. He approached the truck as Grayson County Deputy Caleb Owens arrived on the scene and busted out the driver’s side window while making contact with the driver, 21-year-old Justin M. Huff, of Leitchfield, who told Hoover he was not injured.
Huff was evaluated at the scene by EMS personnel and refused transport. He was then arrested and charged with fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle) and speeding 26 miles per hour or more over the limit.
He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
The Leitchfield Fire Department, Leitchfield PD officers and Grayson County deputies assisted at the scene.
