Spontaneous combustion was responsible for a fire at a Caneyville business.
The Leitchfield Fire Department responded Monday morning at approximately 7:20 to the 500 block of East Maple Street (Hwy 62) on the report of fire at Otis Bryant and Son, Inc.
Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found that fertilizer in an arched metal building had caught fire.
Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said fire personnel thoroughly sprayed the fertilizer and checked for hotspots before clearing the scene.
Duvall said the fire was caused by “spontaneous combustion,” or spontaneous ignition, which occurs when a combustible material ignites without an external heat source. It occurs when a material self-heats through a chemical, biological, or physical process, reaching a temperature high enough to ignite.
There were no injuries reported.
