An inmate at the Kentucky State Reformatory was found walking the streets of Oldham County, and the prison was not aware of the escape.
Alexander Maldonado, 40, was seen walking near Hemlock Court, a residential neighborhood approximately a half-mile east of the reformatory in LaGrange. The Oldham County Sheriff’s Office responded and found Maldonado walking on nearby LaGrange Road near the Oldham County Fairgrounds.
Upon a deputy making contact with Maldonado, the escapee said he was trying to get to Bowling Green and that he was walking “because he had been illegally detained,” according to WAVE News Troubleshooters.
Police also found Maldonado was carrying a binder with his personal information inside.
The deputy returned Maldonado to the prison but wrote in his report that a captain at the reformatory was not aware the prisoner had escaped.
Maldonado was sentenced in 2018 to eight years in prison after being convicted in Warren County of assault of a corrections officer, felony wanton endangerment and trafficking in marijuana.
“At this time, we are unable to provide specific details regarding the escape, as we are still actively investigating the situation,” the prison said in an email to WAVE News Troubleshooters. “Due to security concerns and the safety of both the facility and the public, we are unable to disclose further information.”
