An 18-year-old Wolfe County man is the vice mayor-elect of his hometown.
Jake Denniston, who graduated from Wolfe County High School in May, ran for the Campton city council and received the highest number of votes in the race, making him the town’s vice mayor when he takes office in January 2025.
Campton is a town of approximately 300 residents.
Denniston told WYMT.com that he decided to wait a year before going to college, as he wanted to “gain real-world experience by running for local government.”
“I thought, ‘What better experience to gain in politics than running for office and trying to get out there and see how people really are instead of learning it from a textbook,’” Denniston said.
Wolfe County High School Principal Greg Creech praised Denniston for his work ethic and said he was interested in about politics, even as a high school student.
“Jake was one of those students who was always working very hard to do better for himself. He was always very outspoken. Always in Frankfort talking to legislators; always talking to leaders in the community; always talking to leaders in the state. He was very outspoken. He enjoyed politics very much.”
