A suspect has died after apparently overdosing in the back of a Kentucky State Police cruiser.
State police said the preliminary investigation showed that 49-year-old Shawn D. Gibson, of Oneida (Clay Co.), was arrested by a trooper on the strength of a warrant during a traffic stop on North Highway 66.
Gibson was placed in the rear seat of a KSP cruiser.
“While troopers were continuing their investigation of the traffic stop, Gibson allegedly consumed illicit drugs, resulting in him overdosing,” according to state police.
Gibson was transported to AdventHealth Manchester where he was pronounced deceased by the Clay County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy was performed Thursday morning at the state Medical Examiner’s Office, police said. A toxicology report is pending.
The ongoing investigation is being conducted by KSP Lt. Tye Chavies.
