A man has died in a motel fire caused by a lit cigarette.
The burned body of 66-year-old Barry Stambaugh, of Pikesville was found in a room at the Days Inn in Paintsville Saturday morning at approximately 11:30, according to media reports.
The initial investigation determined that Stambaugh was likely smoking in bed when he fell asleep. The cigarette he was apparently smoking fell from his fingers and caught the mattress on fire.
The mattress, Paintsville police told news outlets, was completely destroyed and the room had major smoke and fire damage. The fire, though, did not spread to other rooms.
No one was alerted to the fire as it happened, as Stambaugh’s body was discovered because the room needed cleaning.
The investigation is ongoing but no foul play is expected.
