3 of 3 incumbent GC School Board members lose, alcohol sales allowed in Falls, medical cannabis passes

In an election that boasted a nearly 64 percent turnout in Grayson County, all three incumbent Board of Education candidates were defeated.

School board elections are staggered, resulting in only the 1st, 2nd and 4th Educational Districts being up for grabs on Election Day.

  • In the 1st Educational District, newcomer Darrell W. Witten won by the narrowest of margins – six votes – over Amanda Wilson Lewis (853 votes to 847). Incumbent candidate Valeria R. Hayes garnered 323 votes to come in a distant third.
  • In the 2nd Educational District, Jonathan L. Decker posted 843 votes, besting his closest competition, John P. Glenn (467 votes), by over 18 percentage points (40.7 percent to 22.5). Incumbent Alfreda H. Weedman tied with Jacob Clark for third place with 381 votes apiece (18.4 percent).
  • The 4th Educational District saw incumbent and school board chair Carolyn Thomason lose to Marcus Whitley 1,008 to 648 (51.4 percent to 32.9 percent). Micah Cox came in third place with 315 votes (15.9 percent).

The 3rd and 5th Educational District elections will be held in 2025.

Leitchfield City Council

There were six candidates running for six seats on the Leitchfield City Council. Receiving the most votes was incumbent James “Clayton” Miller with 1,002 (17.8 percent), followed by incumbent Raymond “Tooty” Cottrell with 961 votes (17.1 percent).

Receiving the third highest vote total was incumbent William “Billy” Dallas with 949 (16.9 percent). Incumbent Terri Haycraft garnered 923 votes (16.4 percent), the fourth most votes.

Newcomers George Hack (916 votes for 16.3 percent) and Tim Bocock (817 votes for 14.5 percent) came in fifth and sixth respectively.

Sitting city council members Jeanna Carnes and Dennis Fentress did not run.

Traditionally, the city council member with the most votes serves as Mayor Pro Tem.

State senator, state representative

Incumbent 18th Representative District state Rep. Samara Heavrin, R-Leitchfield, was unchallenged and received 10,334 votes.

Incumbent State Sen. Stephen Meredith, R-Leitchfield, was challenged by Jamie Skudlarek in the 5th Senatorial District, with Meredith registering 9,810 votes (82.9 percent) to Skudlarek’s 2,031 votes (17.2 percent).

U.S Congress

Incumbent 2nd District Congressional District Congressman S. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, won with 83 percent of the vote (9,866) over Democrat Hank Linderman, of Falls of Rough, who recorded 2,015 votes (17 percent).

Falls of Rough questions

Falls of Rough residents overwhelmingly voted to allow the sale of alcohol by a vote of 265 (80.6 percent) to 64 (19.5 percent).

Alcohol can now be sold in private clubs in Falls of Rough, as 259 (78.7 percent) voters cast ballots allowing the sale of alcohol while 70 (21.3 percent) voters voted “no.”

Grayson County medical cannabis

Grayson County residents voted “yes” by a large margin, allowing the sale of medical cannabis by a licensed dispensary in the county by a vote of 7,401 to 3,908 (65.4 percent to 34.6 percent).

In Grayson County there are 19,053 registered voters, with the 2024 General Election seeing 12,184 votes cast for a 63.95 percent voter turnout.
