Grayson County Alliance (GCA) in coordination with Grayson County Thrive, Grayson County Schools, WellCare, and Leitchfield United Methodist Church recently hosted a Poverty Simulation where participants learn what it’s like living for one month with the challenges created poverty.
The room where the simulation was held represented the Grayson County community. Chairs in the center of the room and tables along a wall represented family homes, community services and businesses.
As in real-life scenarios, participants had to find transportation to work and/or school and put food on the table. Other real-life challenges faced by participants included health issues and the stress created by living in poverty.
Eighty-five people participated in the simulation.
“We had an amazing day learning and building empathy for everyone in our community,” GCA Executive Director Debbie Childress. “In the debrief, many people relayed their frustration in how the systems work. That often a family is trying to do the right thing but there are barriers, and so much red tape. It was a good reminder to everyone in the community that we need to look at our procedures and see if we are contributing to the problem.”
“This simulation gave me a whole new perspective (and) a greater appreciation for the choices she has made and an increased respect for my little sister, and for those just like her,” a participant with a sister in poverty said about the simulation.
Training was provided by Michelle Jones from the Kentucky Education Association.
Join the next Grayson County Thrive meeting where attendees will hear from Grayson County Emergency Management regarding disaster preparedness and warming centers in Grayson County. The event is scheduled for November 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grayson County Extension located at 64 Quarry Road.
