2 GCMS students create Halloween video book

Building skills and confidence, and guiding students to use those skills to help others. That’s how Grayson County Middle School Reading Interventionist Misty Gardner makes a difference in the lives of her students.

She recently worked with 8th graders Keona McQuady and Aaliyah Vigil to complete two reading projects. The students created a “storybox” to go along with a Halloween book as part of a read-aloud project for several Wilkey Elementary School kindergarten students. In addition, the girls recorded the story using an online tool.

Gardner taught them how to record their voices and video edit a Canva read-along project that could be shared with all K-1st grade teachers in the district for use in their classrooms. Keona also read in-person to Wilkey Elementary School kindergarten students this week, which was an extremely positive experience for both.

The success of this type of multi-layered project is an accomplishment with benefits for both Keona and Aaliyah, as well as younger students just learning to read.

“It was definitely a student-led project and a reminder for me of why I wanted to become a teacher,” Gardner said.
