An eight-month-old baby has perished in a residential fire and a two-year-old suffered severe burns, according to Kentucky State Police.

Troopers and the Tompkinsville Fire Department responded to the blaze on West 6th Street in Tompkinsville on Monday afternoon at approximately 1:05.

The state police investigation showed that 25-year-old Ashton Wright was asleep and woke up to her house full of smoke. Wright’s two children, an eight-month-old and two-year-old, were also inside the residence.

Wright, with the assistance of a neighbor, rescued the two-year-old but the baby perished in the blaze.

The toddler was transported to a hospital for treatment of severe burns, according to state police.

The fire is believed to have originated in an electric space heater. The investigation, though, remains ongoing by Trooper Bobby Maxwell.
