A plane with a student pilot and instructor on board has crashed on Breckinridge Lane in Louisville.

The crash occurred Friday night at approximately 6:15 near the intersection of Breckinridge Lane and Kresge Way in St. Matthews. A car was struck by the Piper PA 28 airplane as it crashed onto the major roadway in front of Baptist East Hospital and just north of I-64.

Both the student pilot, who exited the plane under his/her own power, and the instructor, who suffered a broken femur, were transported to University of Louisville Hospital. One person from the vehicle that was struck was also transported to UofL Hospital.

Their current conditions are not known.

The plane, according to WDRB.com, began experiencing engine trouble near the Lewis & Clark Bridge as it flew over the Ohio River. The instructor took over control of the aircraft and was attempting to land at Bowman Field when it crashed about three-fourths of a mile from the airport.

The plane also took out traffic lights and utility lines as it landed on the roadway.

Multiple agencies, including the St. Matthews Police Department, FAA and NTSB are investigating the incident.
