A new law enforcement training facility is scheduled to open early next year in Hopkins County.

Previously, officers from every county in the commonwealth traveled to Richmond to receive the 20 weeks of training. For the first time since basic training became mandatory in 1998, Kentucky will now offer training in two locations simultaneously.

“New officers from the western end of the state will be able to stay closer to home with the new facility in Madisonville,” Gov. Andy Beshear said while making the announcement. “This means they will have more time with their families, and more time to focus on their critical training as they prepare to serve and protect the commonwealth.”

The new training center, described by officials as a “multipurpose training facility,” is expected to cost $50 million. While the facility is being constructed, Department of Criminal Justice Training for new officers from western Kentucky will take place in a building “provided by the Madisonville Police Department,” according to Beshear.

The new facility is expected to open in February 2025.
