Grayson County Schools (GCS) issued a text to parents/guardians on Wednesday afternoon related to “another social media post,” and Breckinridge County Schools have cancelled classes for Thursday.
The GCS text reads:
“We are following up on another social media post that has been brought to our attention and investigated by local law enforcement. At this time, no credible threat related to Grayson County Schools has been found and we are following all safety protocols and procedures to keep students and staff safe.”
District officials then encouraged people to alert the proper authorities of concerning social media posts.
“Please continue sharing any concerns of posts you come across and know that we are committed to reviewing each and every one to ensure the safety of our schools.”
The district then asked parents/guardians to explain to children about the significance of online safety.
“We again encourage you to speak with your student[s] about the importance of online safety and responsible social media use and to remind everyone that if they see or hear anything that could impact school safety, to say something.”
GCS officials stated that the STOP Tipline is available to the entire community at 866-393-6659.
Last week, two people were arrested in Grayson County for a SnapChat post that stated, “I will be shooting up grayson county high …” The resulting investigation uncovered a treasure trove of allegedly illegal activity in Millwood which spurred a local, state and federal investigation that remains ongoing.
Breckinridge Co. cancels classes for Thursday
In an incident that could be related to Grayson Co. Schools issuance of the above text to parents/guardians on Wednesday, Breckinridge Co. Schools cancelled classes for Thursday after a social media threat was discovered on SnapChat.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to cancel school tomorrow, September 19, 2024, due to a SnapChat post that could be a threat to our schools,” Breckinridge Co. Schools Superintendent Dr. Nick Carter said. “After being made aware of this earlier today, our district took measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.”
Earlier on Wednesday, Carter cancelled all after-school activities for Wednesday.
“Out of an abundance of caution and an on-going investigation by law enforcement, all after-school activities on our campuses will be canceled on September 18, 2024,” Carter said. “This includes the Parent/Teacher Conferences scheduled at Breckinridge County High School.”
Shortly before announcing that after-school activities would be cancelled, Carter issued a statement on the social media threat.
“This afternoon, we were made aware of a potentially dangerous social media situation involving the school district. Law enforcement advised the district on how to proceed for the safety of our students and staff and will be increasing police presence at our schools. This situation is currently under investigation by law enforcement. For the remainder of the day (Wednesday), students and staff will remain inside our school buildings. Any students who must go outside will be monitored by school staff. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available. Thank you for your continued support of our schools.”
