A Breckinridge County funeral home has been fined nearly $600,000 for performing illegal cremations.

The investigation, conducted by the Attorney General’s Office of Consumer Protection, resulted in the maximum civil penalty of $580,000 against Cloverport Funeral Home and Kentuckiana Funeral Services, according to the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office.

The fine was leveled due to the funeral home conducting 290 illegal cremations, and the presence of an unlicensed cremation chamber, known as a retort.

“The Attorney General’s Office continues litigation against the owner of these facilities, Anthony Oxendine,” the attorney general’s office said.

As previously reported by K105, the unregistered crematory has been closed since January when the attorney general’s office secured a temporary restraining order.

The investigation began on January 2, 2024. The Cloverport Police Department assisted in the investigation.
